I love you all, folks! That's all you need to know.

I adore my medium. I love working with leather. I believe in pushing the boundaries of what you can do: in your art, your field, and each of our personal skills, goals, dreams and traits.

I believe in pushing, not because we HAVE to, or that we Must or it is RIGHT, but because one LOVES, so deeply, so ecstatically...! Find that art, find that project that keeps you up all night. Find that pattern that make you SO excited to fall asleep, just to wake up again, eager, to craft, to paint, to pick back up, to see how it dried overnight....

That, for me, is leather craft. That, for me, also, is gardening, horticulture, landscape repair.... but Deviantart is for my winter-work; the crafting, the drawing, the long stories, deep dreams, and quick flickers of a vision, caught onto paper, born into life. So: the deer. So: outrageous helmets.

May too, soon, I'll share colored-pencil work. But that medium takes even twice as long as the already laborious leather crafting!

Thank you for visiting. Thank you for pushing, believing and loving. We're all one big family on one big plant; the global-garden, Earth! All of my leathercraft is born out of a solar-powered workshop in Montague MA, where we also operate a small, local plant nursery, growing native fruit trees, nut trees, berry bushes and wildflowers to be planted for free throughout towns and cities on damaged/degraded land. Free food for all. Make this life and make this planet the most beautiful experience you could ever dream.

I get down sometimes too, but that's all part of the beauty. I just don't stress when it happens, and allow myself to get back to what I love: Life!

Celebrating the completion of this new Half-Sized, and-Stitched Leather Bison Sculpture!!!

More images in my Gallery. Complete process on Instagram @ mangold_leather and for sale at www.grass-fedleather.com

Huge thanks to my loyal apprentice Stillwater who logged ~30 hours into this project with me, and sincere gratitude to The Greenfield Gallery who were courteous enough to let us photograph this massive creation in their gallery before shipping it off to auction!

Website Description:
"This half-sized bison is a work of mastery. A fifty-percent scale of real North American Bison, this striking wall mounted art-piece is crafted 100% by hand out of fine 'saddle leather'. It is created entirely by hand using traditional tools and techniques by master artisan in MA. Every piece is hand cut, hand dyed, polished, and stitched into place. The pattern itself is kept secret, guarded in our shop. This prestigious sculpture is incomparable, defining new boundaries in the world of leather-craft. This grand-scale work of design, color, practice and technique is created to add a feeling of artistry, mastery and wonder in those exquisite homes and workplaces who match such a skillful art piece."

Half-Sized Bison Sculpture
Celebrating the completion of this incredible piece. It took two weeks of solo design and pattern-making before a 1.5 week marathon of sewing with apprentice! This is the first major piece created WITH one-on-one assistance throughout the entire construction process. Could not be happier or prouder with how it came out, or our teamwork! Lost count after 30 hours (60 between the two of us) then 30 more on my own after our dedicated week was up, making horns and securing head.... :) Presently, this very night, the Bison is up for AUCTION in Florida, at a very high-end art auction, benefiting the special Olympics. We'll get a fair commission to finance our next project, and, the non-profit native fruit tree nursery that accompanies the workshop ;) But that's another talk! The main goal, beyond sale, is reaching a wider, illustrious audience, and indeed, pushing ourselves to create every bigger and better piece in and increasingly effective manner, and briefest time :)

Love this work eternally. Entirely fueled by wood stove heat, jasmine tea, rocking DJ sets, and, when it came time to sew, about 7hrs of the Lord of the Rings, 'Fellowship' audiobook :)

This is just the beginning.

Blue Deer Head
23 x 16 x 13"
100% leather bust, glass eyes and bronze-fill antlers* on walnut wood.
Bronze-fill antlers fabricated with the expertise of local engineer, Rachael Katz of Studio 7 in Greenfield, MA.

A labor of love, pouring myself into the intricacies of pattern-making, asking 'what more can I do with this material, how far can I extend the possibilities of my techniques, how best can I improve this design, what wants to be born out of this material?!' My heart responds with ever more intricate visions of hand-sewn animals, that allow me to awake with excitement, anticipating to watch these creatures be born through my hands!

Available at: grass-fedleather.com/products/…

Third in a series of life-like leather deer sculptures, as part of an on-going exploration into life-sized animal-head animal forms.

Dyed an enchanting shade of blue to look as if this creature might very well exist, somewhere, out in this world or the next!

100% hand stitched and hand patterned using traditional leather-crafting tools and techniques. Water-based coloring with glass eyes and hand-polished antlers.

The second piece out of many using this particular pattern.

Green Dragon-Helmet
Heavy with the weight of over 150 x-large studs and a pair of hand-formed, hand colored, leather artisan horns!
Dyed deep shades of mossy green. Featuring one grand spiked-spike on the crown, and a thick, removable mask! Only the very best leather through and through. This is armor-grade material made with the same tools and techniques as ancient armories of the past. This is a fantasy helmet, featuring contemporary hard-wear, but all of the cutting and assembling techniques are true to life (but you guys know that, this is deviant-art!)! One of so very few TRUE helmets still born in this world! But I'll save my sales speech for the website!

This one came through in dreams, over and over. I've been working to refine the perfect 'viking' helmet pattern for as long as I have been working in leather. At last, I'm settling into this design! The is the second build, calling it the 'Dragon Helmet', bringing in all of the best colors and painting it with spikes! I want everything covered in spikes! Even my spikes! I just don't know why, but it answers something in my soul :) Enjoy. Part one coming next. Notice the cuts, and folds in the mask, selected from an imperfect piece of material to look battered and scarred.

An ancient symbol of strength and success, fit for kings and captains of the old world and the new.
I love you! AJM
